Hackers-IL was formed in May 2000, when Chen Shapira announced its formation to Linux-IL. Some time beforehand, the Linux-IL mailing list has served a stage to a programming language war, where Smalltalk, LISP, Scheme, Perl, Python and other languages have been discussed, making some of the regulars angry for the off-topicness. Hackers-IL was enacted to form a place where such technical discussions, which are more philosophical in nature, are welcome and recommended.

As of August 2004 the Hackers-IL mailing list has 206 members, and there were 3673 messages sent to it.

This Wiki was formed in August 2004, to serve as a WWW home for Hackers-IL, and a place where its members and the group as a whole can record its endeavours, hyperlinks, and discussions.

Here's our wordy description. And here's a a more condensed mini-charter.

This is the Hackers-IL wiki, which was set up to provide a world-editable web site for everything Hackers-IL.
