Free Software according to the Free Software Definition is software that maintains the right to freely run the program, stufy how it works and modify it, re-distribute copies (possibly for a price), and release modifications to the public.

It is distinguished from proprietary software or semi-proprietary software. The term Open Source has recently become a synonym to Free Software, albeit some software licenses can qualify as open-source and not as free software.

Free here means free as in "Free Speech" and not free as in "Free Beer".
