Dealing with Computer Intruders
From Hackers-IL
trocacout Most computer intruders are not the real problem that faces the Internet in the digital age. Most computer intruders are perfectly innocent young men and women, who just consider intruding into other people's computers a hobby or pas-time, and have no intention to cause actual damage. Contrary to popular belief they are very socialable, have a firm grip of reality, and are responsible and intelligent people. I'm not saying they have a right to crack their way into people's computers and to sniff around, but they are still not the main problem.
The real problem is:
- Sloppily-written programs that host a large number of security problems.
- Clue-less system administrators who are unaware of the dangers.
- Systems that do not have a good way to easily install security updates.
The situation is getting better in all of these aspects, but it is still not good enough. Nevertheless, blaming it on the computer intruders is not beneficial, because if you keep your safe's door wide open, you cannot blame it on the thief. We are better off educating people about the dangers of keeping and constructing sub-standard systems security-wise, than hunting down all these poor kids.
It seems that in some countries the media perpetuated the "computer intruders are the enemy" feeling. However, even the worm and virii writers are only an unpleasant symptom of the real problem.

Most bank robbers are not the real problem facing banks this days, the real problem is untrained employees who acts too hastly and that the safes' doors are far too thin than usual.
